Spring/Summer 2011 Hair trends

Summer is just around the corner.
Have you thought about what hairstyle you'll be sporting at the beach? At the various music festivals? While sipping on a glass of margarita on a patio?

I've selected some of the most notable styles seen on the Spring/Summer 2011 runways and on celebrities.

I really like how this year's trends are all about playing with haircolour.

Several celebrities have gone red.
Rihanna steals the show with her bright red locks, whereas Blake Lively and Scarlett Johansson opt for a more natural strawberry blond tone.

I've already posted about Ombré Hair earlier. Here's a good example of how this trend can work for brunettes, courtesy of Rachel Bilson.

If you're not afraid to experiment, I suggest adding light pink streaks to light hair. The young lady below - a buyer at Opening Ceremony in NYC - has managed to pull this off beautifully. She looks soft, flirty and feminine.

Feeling more exuberant? Go the Nicki Minaj route and dye your tips in a bright neon colour.

Also, postpone your next haircut appointment at least until next fall because long hair is definitely in.

Braids have constantly been spotted on the red carpet over the past few seasons and this summer is no exception.

Lela Rose walked the runway for Charlotte Ronson with my dream hair.

Having a bad hair day or just rushing out? Well 2011 is your lucky year since the messy look is all the rage. Whether you wear it down or knotted into a loose bun, messy hair has graduated from a day-time to a night-time look. Be careful to have the rest of your outfit looking very put-together if you're selecting that option.

Here are three good examples from Matthew Williamson, Proenza Schouler and Michael Kors.
